Kayak Auckland’s Volcanoes

For over 20 years, Fergs Kayaks founded by New Zealand canoeing Olympian Ian

Ferguson, has been taking people of all ages and ability on guided day/night sea

kayaking adventure tours to Rangitoto - the iconic giant volcano sited in the heart of

Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour (Auckland Harbour).

This 250 meter (850 ft) high volcanic island is a unique site of outstanding natural

wildlife and beauty making it the perfect sea-kayaking adventure destination. Having

last erupted out of the sea around 600 years ago, it now lies ‘sleeping’ as a

conservation reserve with an easily achieved trek to the crater summit.

Fergs other fascinating volcano adventure involves a shorter paddle across the

Waitemata to historically significant maritime park North Head ‘Maungauika,’ an

imposing volcanic headland situated at Devonport. This arresting volcanic entrance

to Auckland’s harbour with its intriguing network of military bunkers created in1886

when the site was a defence post, and gentle trek to the crater offers wonderful

exploring and spectacular gulf views.

The safe and sheltered waters of the Waitemata coupled with our highly experienced

guides suits all levels of experience.
